We’re just days away from San Diego Comic Con 2010 – the closest thing to Christmas in July (if only we could figure out how to incorporate gift-giving). With Preview Night quickly approaching, it’s time for our second installment of 8 Things: my list of what I’m looking forward to seeing at SDCC.
No. 8 – The Unknown. The panel schedules have been posted, some of the products already highlighted, lists have leaked, etc. Let’s face it, there’s a lot we already know. I think there will be 20-some odd new DCUC on display and if you believe the rumors, I think we’ve heard the names of most of them. I like being in the know, but I also like being surprised. So no. 8 on my list goes to all the reveals and news that we have no idea are coming. May each of us be pleasantly surprised.
No. 7 – The Coverage. Since I’m not attending this year, my dog and I will be up late nights glued to the computer. Well, she’ll probably be sleeping on my desk, but I’ll be clicking around like a madman. As I did last year, I’ll be compiling the links I find into Armchair Coverage. So an early nod of appreciation to all those great sites that make the trek to SDCC and report back with news and images from the floor of comic con for those of us that can’t make it.
No. 6 – The comic panels. While toys are my first love, I’m always excited to hear the latest comic news at SDCC, DC’s in particular. My time reading Batman is coming to a close with the imminent return of Bruce and Superman is on my no-read list while he’s walking around lecturing people, so I’m looking for some new titles. If the DC offerings aren’t up to par, hopefully Marvel (Steve Rogers is being awesome across three titles), IDW (Transformers has me hooked), and Vertigo will pick up the slack.
No. 5 – Symbiotech! This line of 3 3/4″ riders & their 6-7″ beasts has been a favorite of mine since it debuted as part of the Fantastic Exclusive. I’ve been waiting years to see these toys made a reality and it seems my wait is finally over. The most recent issue of ToyFare reported that Symbiotech was going to finally get its chance to shine. According to the 4H, the line will have a new type of articulation with some Glyos compatibility in the mix!
No. 4 – The Outer Space Men! You had to know this one was coming. The OSM has caught on like wildfire on IAT and we can’t get enough. For SDCC, not only are we on tap to see the final versions of the Alpha Phase exclusives in their proper translucent glory, but we should be getting our first look at the two figures in wave three! It’s hard to pick two, but I’m hoping we see Commander Comet & Mystron!
No. 3 – Hasbro. While Mattel is trying to swallow our wallets whole, we at IAT still look at the Hasbro offerings and wonder how to afford it all! With Transformers, G.I. Joe, Star Wars, Marvel Universe, and Iron Man 2 all vying for our attention there’s little doubt that Hasbro is going to impress us at SDCC. We know that Joe product is still catching up to last year’s JoeCon and Transformers just had Botcon, but we’re still hoping for some cool new reveals anyway.
No. 2 – DC Classics. Because we love it so, DC Classics almost got our number one spot. But, as we mentioned earlier, if you believe the rumors, then we’ve got a good idea of what we’re going to see for this line. If you picked up the latest copy of ToyFare, you’ve seen Creeper, Jonah Hex, & Bane. This trio would seem to confirm the rumored lineup of DCUC16. A modern Kyle Rayner also appeared in the magazine due to his place in the super-secret subline. Mattel plans to show us two waves of figures us as well as a few other surprises like the 4th TRU exclusive figure and some other possible store exclusives. We’re excited to see the DC stuff even if we already know about most of it, but that rascally ‘unknown’ has shown up to make the difference and give the No. 1 spot to…
No. 1 – MOTU Classics. There are some things we know we’re going to see like Grizzlor and the King Grayskull redeco with new accessory, and there are things that we know we’ll be shown but don’t have the details on like the October weapons pak (we’re crossing our fingers for some orange Faker weapons), the armybuilder 2pk, and the 2011 subscription figure. It’s the six monthly figures that have really piqued our interest. Possibly because a little speculation about the pieces that we have is getting us excited about seeing some of our favorite characters. The last few releases have given Mattel the majority of parts for characters like Man-E-Faces & Roboto. Could Whiplash’s chest be an early indicator of Buzz Off? I’m not sure who the six or so we’re going to see will be, but if it’s anything like Toy Fair, then there’s going to be some frantic calls between the IAT staff on Friday afternoon. We may love DC best, but MOTU Classics is the most fun toy line in years.
How about you? What are the things you’re most excited to see at SDCC?
I’m looking forward to most of the stuff cited above plus news on the future of Infinite Heroes. If Marvel Universe is still going strong, then we need Mattel to step up plans and better match the competition.
If the two 4″ lines were more compatible, that’d make them both harder to resist!
I’m not all that interested in what the big boys are doing, it’s the smaller companies like the Four Horsemen, Onell, BifBangPow, and Shocker that are being innovative while the big companies just pump out version 36 of He-Man or Snake Eyes.
well, not to nitpick, but mattel has only given (as of con) prince adam, faker, battle armor he-man, DC comic he-man and he-man thusfar as he-man reduxes. there was a re-release of the core he-man, but PA and faker are really their own characters, kind of.
and how many versions of the tick is shocker doing, 3? so that pretty matches up w/ the he-man variations we’ve gotten.
Well, to nitpick, he is saying 36 Snake Eyes so he could mean all the way back to the beginning (there are actually 51 Snake Eyes), so you could conceivably count up all the He-Man versions ever. 😀
but to pick the nit further, neither tick, shadowhawk, maxx, or blue beetle are new to action figures, so all those shocker figs are also johhny come latelies, rather than fresh new concepts. (and due to shockers’ own incompetence, they got trumped on their own indy comic concept by toy biz, so even in “new,” they’re paying retail, so to speak) and i don’t believe BBP is cutting any teeth either. there is innovative stuff happening out there, but mr head cited four sources when only two of those are accurate.
The Mattel panels on Friday are all I care about. The news can’t come out of those fast enough.
Friday afternoon is going to be crazy!
Marvel Universe mainly for me. And any thing Hasblow is willing to mention about Marvel Legends. Remember those 2pks we voted on LAST YEAR!?
i too have been dying for more info on those two packs. i want more marvel legends!!
for my tastes though, hasbro wins thd con-test (see what i did there?) for coolest exclusive w/ galactus. sweet fancy moses he looks incredible!!
Man, that was a year ago. Where’s my Valkyrie?
where’s ebbie’s mcguiness hulk? where’s everyone else’s deadpool? trust me, those 2 packs are well anticipated, al hasbro has to do is release the bloody things!!
For DC, it’s the Legion 5pk that I want to see most. I don’t care for the GL line since it’s based on Darkest Night and the lineup for wave sixteen sounds a little too Batman. Give me Robin and Mercury and I might be ready for seventeen.
It does sounds Batman heavy, particularly if a Batman subline is a possibility.
I’m excited for DCUC the most and the GL line. I like the modern Kyle and hope we see Arisia, Boodikka and some of the non-Green Lanterns. Bane will be the first C&C to motivate me into buying an entire wave since Darkseid, so I’m excited to see what else is in his series.
@CoffeeJoe: I’m with ya, dude! What the he’ll happened to Deadpool?! Now TRU is restocking the classic Iron Man & Nick Fury 2pks again.
On the subject of non-GLs, the rumored lineup is decidedly other colors like yellow and black. Kinda odd.
I wouldn’t say I don’t want Ultra-Humanite and Validus, but I’m not feeling the excitement for those two.
Heres my top 5:
1.DC Universe classics that right I am fan of DC comics I know that we gonna see wave 16 figures and 17 mayde 18.
2.New Star Wars toys from Hasbro of course I want see pics of next ROTJ wave and new vehicles and exclusives.
3.Ghostbusters I wanna see some ghosts and Gatekeeper I want Zuul human and terror dog versions.Mattel plz give us terror dogs.
4.Motuc classics this toy line is really awesome I really want to see classics versions of Roboto and Mosquitor.
5.New Hot Toys figures from different movies and games Id like to see Predators Falconer figure and AC Altair.
I’d like Ghostbusters to have a nice showing, but I’m not expecting it so it didn’t make the list.
And Hot Toys… if I could afford those I’d be ecstatic. 🙂
I’m most excited to see Mercury and Riddler in dcuc. Iron is awesome and Gold looks awesome, so I’m pysched for the rest of the Metal Men. On the GL line I’m ready to see what the lineup is all about. If we’re getting those sinestro guys as variants or with swappable heads.
I’m really looking forward to Mercury. I’m expecting him in that taller/slim buck in metallic red… he’ll look cool. I can’t wait to get Gold!
I have a lot of questions about the GL line, so I’m looking forward to seeing them.
I’m just hoping that the MOTU stuff is vintage. I don’t mind them including all the girls stuff and teh new stuff in the line, but the last few months have been dry for vintage fans.
i do imagine the last couple months have been tough for vintage lovers, but hey, next month gives you a big shot in the arm, right? whiplash looks like a double awesome cone w/ sprinkles! we know grizzlor is coming up soon too, so more goodness to be had.
but come on man, tell me gygor and cheif carnivus aren’t going to look awesome w/ the collection! you might be primarily a vintage collector, but those designs are top notch and will fit in great w/ the old aesthetic.
I think the MOTU showing will be vintage-friendly.
No movie news? I’m stoked for anything we can hear about Green Lantern!!
I get so caught up in the other news, I forget the movie stuff until I check back on it. Heck, last year the armchair coverage was so time consuming I didn’t even really check out the comic news until Sunday. LOL
Ghostbusters is what I want to see. We need clean Ghostbusters but more importantly we need non-Ghostbusters! I’m hoping this ecto club is a good sign.
I think the line is just the holdover until the film, so I think it’s safe regardless. I’m not buying a sub under any circumstance… so I hope the fig isn’t cool…
Hmm, you should come by Small Press while you’re at it. Booth number S05, specifically! VISIT ME!
I’m going to cover some toy-news at SDCC, but to be honest I don’t find the stuff from the major companies all that interesting either. I’m probably going to run around looking for resin toys and plush dolls instead of action figures.
(By the way, if someone can loan me their Nikon D700 for a few days, I’d be much obliged to repay the favor with lots of pictures of sexy cosplayers, haha)
LOL. If I had a D700, I’d be ecstatic about that too… 😀
DCUC lineups and dates. I thought we should have started seeing wave 14 already in Walmarts. Green Lantern Classics interests me too due to the great compatibility with DCUC (unlike Public Enemies).
I’m looking for some more nostalgic MOTUC figures.
I’m also specifically looking for non-Ghostbuster Ghostbuster figures.
I think it will be soon. I’m betting the August reset will be a great time to go hunting for them. Possibly for the GL 5pk too.
I just want to know how Mattel will make my wallet weep with the MOTUC…
Then What’s coming on DCUC (crossing my fingers for Apache Chief…)
Then Hasbro’s MU and GI Joe offerings…
To find out if the NECA TMNT are still in Toy Limbo… Stupid Playmates!
Apache Chief is a HUGE want. 😀
I swear, the most requested article could be all DC Classics…
I just want to get the exclusives and be done with it.
Long time lurker, first time commenter here. Just wanted to say that I love your blog.
For SDCC, I’m really excited for the MOTU panel. I think this will be the first one where Scott can really let his hair down and amaze us with the extra budget he has to have with the line being such a success. I’m hoping we see some out there stuff!
The only thing I care about is the MOTUC stuff. Even though I’m a villain guy, I would really like at least two vintage hero reveals. Preferably Sy-klone and Mekaneck. And also a snakeman.
Your #8 is my #2. Would probably be #8, too, if I were collecting any lines other than DCU. Mattel’s the only domestic* company catering to 6″ fans right now. Hasbro has a little, but nothing I want. NECA reveals are frustrating, since their lines average 0-1 waves. Most other companies are out of business, incompetent, or both. Still, very much looking forward to this weekend. One of the highlights of the year.
I’ve glossed over comic news in the past, partly because I hate spoilers, but I’ll try to pay closer attention this year. Need to be informed.
*I’m eager to see what Japanese toy companies have to show at the Summer Wonder Festival on the 25th.

Matty is posting pics of their displays being set up.
I **NEED** that HALL OF JUSTICE!!!!
and what I thought was Doomsday CnC has been confirmed as Lobo, which makes me question why they would throw such an “old” figure, esp an Exclusive, into that display unless they were feeling out a RE-release??
also, it appears in THOR that Helmsworth is also laying Don Blake. a VERY muscular Don Blake, going by the new pic released of him pulling Mjolnir free of a rock.
Hold up! If Mattel has a GBII movie head for the slime blower Winston than why aren’t they using it in the TRU 4pk? That’s just stupid!
