Most Awesome Thing Today:
Gentle Giant Goes Jumbo on Secret Wars!

Ok, so sometimes I post these news items about cool toys that are coming out and some of y’all are always “I’m not buying it” or “that’s nuts”. I always ask myself – why are you stopping to post? I try to never give stuff I’m not going to buy the time of day… but that’s not important right now! Gentle Giant has made me one happy camper today.

I can only mostly dabble in their Jumbo stuff, particularly when it’s close to my heart. I love my Gonk Droid. I had to buy the AT-AT Driver & will snag a TIE Fighter Pilot when he comes out (isn’t that an impressive Jumbo SW collection?!). I wish I could’ve afforded that gorgeous Wampa. I’m anxiously awaiting them to get to some of my favorite G.I. Joes. I was annoyed that Mattel went it alone instead of letting Gentle Giant take a crack at the Jumbo MOTUs. Those could’ve been a million times better (we all know I’m still getting Faker if they make him). But now? Now, Gentle Giant has really spoken to me.

Jumbo Secret Wars!!

I might die! So we’ve got a pretty sweet Hobgoblin, silhouettes of Wolverine… and Magneto, I’m guessing. That’s all well & good. Hobgoblin looks amazing. But they’re starting off with what is one of my favorite toys of all time! It’s one of the few toys I remember asking for as a kid. We were out of town, at the Springfield Kay-Bee Toys. I was with my parents. Spidey was on a little 2×2 display in the entrance. It was the first time I ever saw the black costume on Spider-Man and I absolutely fell in love with it. It’s gorgeous. I’ve picked up that costume multiple times over and while I love nearly all of ’em (As long as their’s no dumb, blue shading). Nothing beats that sleek, admittedly mostly unarticulated, original figure. And now that’s going to be in Jumbo size? SOLD!

So it’s okay if the price is outrageous. It’s cool if none of you buy it! Because I’m pretty sure this was made just for me! This is amazing. Did I mention we’re getting the lenticular shields? Aaaaagh!

  1. I will buy that wolverine without a a doubt, but I need to donate some books to get back some shelf room.

  2. So is this some kind of fad that toy companies are getting into lately with making Jumbo size versions of vintage toys?

I don’t hate it, but I’m curious as to why…

    1. I’m not sure what larger forces predated it, but this is GG having success with Star Wars and looking to branch out because they sell. The groups here – Star Wars, Joes, & Comic Collectors – don’t overlap a ton, so you’re not double dipping on the same base too much. And Mattel was just hogging in to.

  3. Interesting. I always liked the Secret Wars line as they were the first action figures I ever got. Captain America, Hobgoblin, The Turbo Cycle and The Doom Roller.

          1. Maybe at some point but my money is kind of tied up in another project. Also I really didnt like the comic that much. Sorry to hear about the flood man.

    1. Yeah, I thought it was Kang too. Good. I thought I was crazy. I was planning a trip to my parents’ house to verify as I still have him on card. It’s torn up to s#!t, but I can’t get myself to open him up for nostalgic purposes.

    2. That’s a good guess based on the gun! But Magneto & Iron Man, I believe, carried the same ray gun. The tipoff is the subtle edge on the gloves. Kang used Iron Man arms that had a much bigger cuff. And he had a belt!

    3. It definitely looks like Magneto. One of Kang’s hands was making a fist, and he had the “gauntlet” arm molds. Plus, I’m guessing they will sell about a million more Magnetos then they will Kangs.

  4. I like it. I had none of these as a kid, so it’d be fun to grab Doom and maybe Spidey.

I think it would be kinda fun to pick favs from each of these giant ’80s lines. If only Mattel hadn’t effed up Stratos with that cut at the knee. Just kills it. Now please make Super Powers! I need giant sized SP New Gods.

    1. I saw someone on FB who chopped a Giant He-Man to make some cross cut art or something and the Feet are made from a different Material than the rest of the leg. (Lower Leg is dense rubbery plastic to give the figure some weight while the upper leg is hollow.) I suppose the leg cut on Stratos is due to that.

  5. Again with the 12″ figures? }Sigh{

I just don’t get it. Probably never will. Spend huge amounts of money, take up loads of space, and they don’t look anywhere near as good as much smaller, better-articulated, better-sculpted, much cheaper figures.

Baffling. And, as you may have guessed, I am not buying any of these, just like I’m not buying any of the other ridiculously overpriced foot-tall lumps.

  6. I totally put my pre-order in last night. I completed my Super Powers collection and my next focus was going to be on the Secret Wars figures but getting them in 12 inch just blew my mind. I ma in for the long haul and will get every single one. Man the memories these figures bring back is crazy. So freaking excited.

      1. maybe. i would only consider that option after they did all the other figures first. and even then it would be based on the character.

  7. Alright, NOW they got my attention. I haven’t been interested in the giant vintage figures craze, right now, but if they make Secret Wars Dr. Doom, I’m getting that with a side of fries. …but they won’t touch, ’cause I don’t want that grease all over the toy.

I won’t be getting any of the other, mind you, but I have a special place in my heart for that particular Doom, so I’ll nab it without hesitation; fries or no.

I really would prefer some fries, though.

  8. I just don’t get the so-called ‘Jumbo’ craze that’s underway. Naturally it goes back to Mattel’s Shogun Warriors and there’s a hipster ironic tip to the whole thing, but I just…meh.

Glad for you Noisy, naturally! It’s always nice to recapture a moment in time.

When someone re-releases Remco’s ‘Monkey Division’ toy line (fat chance in our anti-gun world!) or Mattel dares to try to create Major Matt Mason Classics (want want want but I just know it would be so poorly executed…) I can get excited.

    Or Starcom. Give me Starcom.

And Hasbro, figure out that GI Joe is something you can make and make money on, huh? Stop trying to live on media tie-ins and just go for it. Adventure Team!

      1. They released a Matt Trakker figure as part of the GI Joe 25th Anniversary line. I was really hoping that might lead to some sort of resurgence.

        1. I liked the figure but I never owned it as I don’t like the 25th Anniversary figures’ construction. I really wish they would brin it back as M.A.S.K. had agreat concept and has aged very well compared to other 80’s toys and shows. Also I believe Transformers made reference to M.A.S.K. inan episode of Prime. Also I think IDW featured M.A.S.K. in a comic.

    1. I think the problem with GI Joe is that stores aren’t interested in action figures that don’t have media tie-ins. Which is kind of hilarious, because the biggest pegwarmers of the last decade have been movie figures. Anybody need some Green Lantern or Man of Steel Movie Masters? My local TRU still has them. Plenty of GI Joe: Retaliation figures, too.

I completely agree about the 12″ figures. I don’t get the appeal of taking something that was under-detailed and under-articulated 30 years ago and blowing it off to highlight how sub-par it was for the time, much less how poorly the quality of those figures has held up.

      1. The biggest problem with GI Joe is Hasbro’s marketing. They said Renegades didn’t sell well but it never really had its own line and when they did release figures it was after the show had finished. it was a shame it didn’t do better as I liked Renegades. Not to mention they don’t even sell them in the UK anymore.

        1. Which is hella ironic, as Palitoys introduced so many innovations to Action Man (nee GI Joe): flocked hair, gripping hands, the Eagle Eye action, and the thing that was never ported to the U.S., the ’tilt up head’ sniper action.

Also I think the more recent ‘quasi-real muscle body’ Joe was an Action Man deal. (Takara Japan gave us the parts to make Mike Power Atomic Man 🙂 )

Action Man kept going long after Hasbro USA gave up on the 11 3/4 inch form. I don’t think England went thru the ‘Super Joe’ nonsense.

and ALL of that is gone now. Hasbro has consolidated all their overseas partners so they’re one giant global company, and in that process they completely lost touch with how Hasbro worked, the risks, the innovation, the fun.

What makes GI Joe work, be it 3 3/4 inch or 12 inch, is the razor/razorblades sales concept. You put out the figure, you put out a variety of ‘add-ons’ at different pricepoints, you make money.

Mattel is doing a bang-up job with Imaginext at all different prices. They even have the beloved ‘giant-as-all-f**k Christmas gift’ mega-toy this year. Man I really want that stupid Space Tank Base thing.

Hasbro could be doing this. And not shelling out money for licenses. Put it out, promote promote promote. Revive the Adventure Team if ‘military’ seems ill considered.

          Bah.

    2. This should be the easiest sale ever made for me cuz some of my best foundational memories of action figures were the secret wars figures, but I couldn’t be less interested in these. Not in that scale, not at that price point. Just not even a blip on my radar.

And yes, the silhouette above is magneto. Mags is the oldest original toy I own, I’d know that silhouette in the dark. I’ve repainted that silhouette three times, I’ve made friendly plastic armor for it twice, I’ve flown that silhouette in my shoecraft “Rheebok 1”, I’ve taken that silhouette on planes, in a train, and in countless automobiles, and I’ve worn that silhouette under my robes at my high school graduation. It’s magneto.
